Chicago Dissertation: Formatting Is Basic for Your Dissertation
Writing a Chicago dissertation
The first point you should be aware of while writing a Chicago dissertation is that Chicago as a formatting style has a number of requirements that every student should follow. Below, you will find a brief list of basic points to follow while writing a Chicago dissertation.
#1: Margins, fonts, justification, and spacing
A typical Chicago dissertation presupposes 1 inch margins on all sides, unless the paper is to be bound. In such a case, you can leave larger margins, up to 2 inches, on the left side of each page. The font used in Chicago dissertations is usually 10 or 12 point, Times New Roman or Palatino. Further on, Chicago dissertations are always left-justified and double spaced (except block quotes and lengthy headings that are single-spaced).
#2: Title page and headings
A Chicago dissertation must have a title page that contains the title of the paper (with all letters capitalized), student’s name, university name, course name, and date. As well, it is required that all four levels of headings should be used in Chicago dissertations. The major heading is the title of the paper, and it is capitalized. All three heading levels are written in bold, but the first level ones are centered, the second level headings are flush left, while the third level headings are indented 0,5 inch.
#3: Footnotes and lists
Finally, it is typical for a Chicago dissertation to contain footnotes. They are placed on the pages they refer to and are written in the smaller font than the text of the paper (e.g. 12 font in the text and 10 font in footnotes). Lists are developed with the use of numbers, but bullet points are also acceptable.
